Doctorate with Publications
At Massey, a doctoral candidate can gain a PhD by one of two pathways:
- a “Doctorate by Monograph” (a thesis in book form with chapters). The thesis or parts of the thesis may be published after publication, or
- a “Doctorate with Publications” (generally, between two and six research papers that are either published, in review, or in press at the time of thesis submission).
Candidates are advised to ask their supervisors for guidance over which pathway is best for their research project.
The Doctoral Thesis with Publications page has comprehensive guidelines relating to:
- the preparation, structuring, and examination of a thesis with publications,
- the authorship of publications to be submitted as part of the doctoral thesis, and
- frequently asked questions.
The Graduate Research School offers additional guidance relating to the publication and authorship of doctoral research.
Massey’s Researcher Support page includes advice on how to:
- publish and share research,
- learn about metrics that measure the impact of a publication, and
- request a research report or publication impact report.
The APA Style Blog has guidelines on how to adapt a thesis for publication.
